Stress is one of the biggest factors in how well someone will age. Typically, the greater the level of stress, the worse and more obvious the aging process. And we’re not just talking environmental stressors like pollution and the daily dose of free radicals we all have to contend with. Nope, it doesn’t end there. The level of stress you feel everyday plays a huge part in this. And with a busy modern life, daily emotional and mental stress is far from an easy thing to avoid. Though you can of course take steps to try and avoid extra stress in your every day life, the reality is that it’s probably not going away. So, what is there to do?
Meditate. If you already have an established meditation practice, then you know exactly what we’re talking about! If not, allow us to explain. Meditation helps with stress reduction by teaching and allowing you a space to practice being calm, centered and focused no matter what’s going on. By allowing yourself to sit in silence and simply allow the craziness of your mind to blow over while you mindfully breathe, you literally retrain your brain to respond differently to stress and other stimuli.
Meditation also encourages and fosters mindfulness, which in turn helps you to be more conscious and aware in your everyday engagements. This awareness translates into a less immediate stress response. Why? Because over time you will have accustomed yourself to “widening the gap”, meaning taking a moment in the space between stimulus and response, so that you can choose exactly how you want to respond to the situation or source of potential stress.
Meditation, even just 10 minutes a day, also provides a daily dose of quiet and time with yourself. Though it sounds simple and insignificant, this small but important window of time can absolutely help with stress reduction; after all, how many of us feel stressed and depleted simply because we don’t have enough time for ourselves? By meditating daily you give yourself that necessary window of mindful me time so you can go through the rest of your day more grounded, calm and resilient to stress. This resilience will cross over into your appearance as worry, frown and stress induced fine lines stay away.
Take 10 minutes every day to just sit, breathe and allow yourself to be. It could very well be one of the best things you ever do for your skin.
